Mt. Hood, Oregon
Elevation: 11,240 feet
Mileage: 8.0 miles
Vertical Gain: 5,300 feet
Route: Hogsback, Pearly Gates

July 2nd - 5th, 2002

Mt. Hood is the highest peak in Oregon and ranked 5th hardest of the U.S. 50 Highpoints. Mt. Hood is one of the most climbed glaciated peaks in the world but shouldn't be taken lightly. We got a grim reminder of how deadly the mountain can be on May 30th, 2002 when 4 climbers slipped around the Pearly Gates on the southern route, taking out 5 more climbers as they slid down the hill falling into a bergshrund. Three of the climbers were fatally injured and the rescue helicopter crashed and tumbled down the mountain, luckily none of the helicopter crew was killed.
