Blanca Peak / Ellingwood Point
Elevation: 14,345 / 14,042 feet
Mileage: 8.0 miles
Vertical Gain: 4,500 feet
Route: Northwest Face / South Face from Lame Como Road

June 18 - 19th, 2004

It was once again time to return to the Blanca Group. We had climbed Little Bear via the southwest ridge two weeks ago, so on the agenda this time, was to climb Blanca Peak and Ellingwood using the Lake Como Road approach. We had heard many stories about the infamous Lake Como Road, so finally we would be able to experience it firsthand, for a good video about how bad the road really is CLICK HERE. Success on both of these peaks would only leave Culebra Peak in the Sangre De Cristos for Amy and I both and would close out the Blanca Group for us. Blanca Peak standing at 14,345 feet, is the 4th highest peak in Colorado, and is the highest peak in the Sangre De Cristos. Ellingwood although only standing at 14,042 feet, is named after the famous mountaineer Albert Ellingwood who pioneered many first ascents in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains.
